About

Maple LeafCanadian Spelling is an ezine about The Great White North: pine trees, mountains, lakes, maple syrup, polar bears, beavers, moose, hockey, igloos, year round winter, and a sense of humour.

From the perspective of living in Canada, “The Great White North” is always just a bit farther North, until you hit the Arctic Ocean. In between the Arctic and the political border at the 49th parallel, is Canada. You can find us on most maps of the world – second largest country in the world.

Canada does have a lot of pine trees and wilderness. We also have huge cities, Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal have the largest populations. Ottawa is the capital of Canada, and farther north than the bigger cities. People still think Canada is a frozen tundra. We used to see tourists arrive with ski racks and skis on their car roof, in summer. It doesn’t happen as often now. I have been asked if Canada is a communist country, do we only speak French, etc. I’m glad that Canada is (usually) liked by people in/ from other countries. I’m happy that Canada and Canadians have a good reputation for being polite, litter free, and nice. But, of course its not 100%. As a country, Canada is over 150 years old and things happen…

I am Laura Brown. I have lived in Ontario most of my life and traveled to the East and West coast of Canada with family and solo on the Greyhound bus. I’d like to get to Northern Canada but I’m not getting any younger.

I love Canada. I know Canada has some faults, nothing could ever be perfect. For one thing, perfection is in the eye of the beholder. Secondly, would you really want anything to be completely perfect? How dull that would be.
